Marij van Gorkom studied music and chemistry, first at Indiana University, where she studied clarinet with Eli Eban, and then after obtaining the BS degree in chemistry, she moved to Leiden University to follow the MSc program in biophysical chemistry. In 2007 she obtained her BM degree in both bass clarinet and (e-flat) clarinet at Codarts, University of Professional Arts Education, in Rotterdam. She studied bass clarinet with Henri Bok and (e-flat) clarinet with Jan Jansen and José Luis Estellés. Currently she is studying 'clarinet baix' with Harry Sparnaay at the Esmuc in Barcelona.

MANTIS (Manchester Theatre in Sound) presents a weekend of electroacoustic concerts featuring composers based at the NOVARS Research Centre, a full concert curated by and featuring guest artist Marij van Gorkom (bass clarinet and live electronics) and the MANTIS large-scale loudspeaker sound diffusion system for an exciting and immersive listening experience.
This event forms part of the New Music North West Festival, the fourth and largest ever festival celebrating the wealth of creative talent in the North West.
